For years I thought I just had bad luck with foundation. Pink shades made me look gray, and yellow shades made me look orange.

It turns out I have olive undertones, and that explains almost every shade mistake I made. Once I knew it, finding my match got much easier.

This guide covers how to tell if you have olive undertones, six simple tests you can do at home, and the exact makeup shades that work on my light-medium olive skin as of October 2026.

If you already know you are olive, my guide to the best Rare Beauty blush for olive skin goes shade by shade. My Armani Luminous Silk review covers my everyday foundation, and my foundation testing guide walks through 40+ formulas. I also broke down the Rhode blush shades for olive skin and why m.ph Le Skin never pulls pink on me.

The three products I reach for most on my light-medium olive skin.

What Are Olive Undertones?

Olive undertones are a muted green or gray cast under the skin that sits on top of a warm, cool or neutral base. They matter because standard foundations are built on pink or yellow, so olive skin often looks ashy, gray or orange in the wrong shade. Knowing this is most useful for anyone who has never found a foundation match that looks right.

The Short Answer

You likely have olive undertones if pink foundations look ashy on you and yellow ones look orange. Olive skin has a soft green or gray cast, looks fresher next to pure white than cream, and often tans easily. Olive is a modifier, not a temperature, so it can be warm, cool or neutral.

Quick Takeaways

  • Olive undertones are a green or gray cast in the skin
  • Olive can be warm, cool or neutral, at any depth
  • The foundation mismatch test is the most reliable check
  • The vein test does not work well for olive skin
  • Look for foundation shades labeled olive, N or WO
  • Neutral pinks, terracotta and mauve blush flatter olive skin

TL;DR – When pink shades look ashy and yellow shades look orange, you likely have olive undertones. Olive is a green-gray modifier, so it can sit on warm, cool or neutral skin at any depth.

What Are Olive Undertones?

Olive undertones are a muted green, gray or khaki cast under the skin. Olive is not its own temperature. It is a modifier that sits on top of a warm, cool or neutral base, which is why olive skin can be hard to match with standard pink or yellow foundations.

Your skin tone is how light or deep you are. Your undertone is the color underneath that stays the same, even when you tan.

Olive undertones show up at every depth, from fair to deep. Color expert Phyrra calls olive a modifier rather than a temperature, and that framing finally made my own skin make sense.

How Do You Know If You Have Olive Undertones?

You likely have olive undertones if most foundations look wrong on you in a specific way. Pink-based shades look ashy or gray, and yellow-based shades look orange. Olive skin also tends to look a little gray or green in daylight photos, and it usually tans easily instead of burning.

That was my experience exactly. I used to buy shades that matched in the store and then looked muddy by lunch.

The other big clue is that the classic undertone tricks don't give you a clear answer. If you have tried the vein test and the jewelry test and still feel unsure, olive is worth checking.

What Are the Best Tests for Olive Undertones?

The best test for olive undertones is the foundation mismatch test: swatch one pink and one yellow shade on your jaw in daylight. If the pink looks ashy and the yellow looks orange, you are likely olive. The white-versus-cream test and a daylight photo are good backup checks.

  1. 1
Take off all makeup and stand by a window in daylight. Indoor bulbs add yellow and hide the green-gray cast.
  2. 2
Hold a pure white sheet of paper, then a cream one, next to your jaw. Olive skin usually looks fresher against white and sallow against cream.
  3. 3
Swatch one pink-based and one yellow-based foundation on your jaw. If the pink looks ashy and the yellow looks orange, you are likely olive.
  4. 4
Take a daylight photo with no filter. Olive skin often reads slightly gray, khaki or green in photos.
  5. 5
Think about how you tan. Olive skin usually tans easily and turns golden-green instead of pink.
  6. 6
Try a neutral or olive-labeled foundation shade. If it disappears into your skin, you have your answer.

Do all of these in natural light. The bathroom mirror at night lies, and I learned that the expensive way.

Are Olive Undertones Warm, Cool or Neutral?

Olive undertones can be warm, cool or neutral. The olive part is the green-gray cast, and the temperature underneath can go either way. Warm olive leans golden, cool olive leans gray or slightly blue, and neutral olive sits in the middle, which is where my own light-medium skin lands.

This is why the question "is olive warm or cool" gets so many different answers online. Both answers can be right for different people.

Healthline describes olive as a mix of neutral and warm undertones with green added. In practice, the easiest way to find your temperature is to try neutral shades first and adjust warmer or cooler from there.

What Is the Difference Between Olive and Neutral Undertones?

The difference between olive and neutral undertones is the green-gray cast. Neutral skin is a balance of pink and yellow, so neutral foundation shades usually match. Olive skin has an extra green or gray layer, so even neutral shades can look a little too beige or too pink on it.

Many people are both. I'm neutral olive, which is why neutral shades like Armani 5.75 and Le Skin 110N work on me.

If neutral shades are close but not quite right, try a shade labeled olive at the same depth. That small shift is often the whole fix.

How Do You Find Foundation for Olive Undertones?

To find foundation for olive undertones, look for shades labeled olive, N for neutral, or WO for warm olive. Swatch two or three on your jaw, not your hand, and check them in daylight after 20 minutes. If a shade turns orange or gray as it sets, it is the wrong undertone.

My everyday match is Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk in 5.75. In January 2026, Who What Wear reported that Armani added 18 shades and a new green pigment to expand its olive range.

I also wear m.ph Le Skin in 110N on lighter days. In my LA testing I needed two shades a year, one for summer and one for winter, because olive skin tans fast.

Which Makeup Shades Work Best for Olive Undertones?

The makeup shades that work best for olive undertones are neutral or olive-labeled foundations, soft neutral pinks and terracotta blushes, sheer neutral bronzers and warm mauve lips. These are the seven products I actually wear on my light-medium neutral olive skin, ranked by how often I reach for them.

My Everyday Foundation
Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

Rhode Pocket Bronze comes in 8 shades, from pebble to plunge. It is sheer and easy to build, which matters on olive skin because a heavy hand is what turns bronzer muddy. Pick by your depth, then go one shade lighter than you think.

Press is a warm pinky mauve and the lip shade I wear most. Mauves like this flatter olive skin because they have enough warmth to avoid looking gray. It is my answer when someone asks what nude to wear.

Which Foundation Lines Have Real Olive Shades?

As of October 2026, the foundation lines with clearly labeled olive shades include Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk, Dior Forever Skin Glow, Haus Labs Triclone and Lisa Eldridge The Foundation. Lisa Eldridge labels the most, with seven olive shades. Armani added olive depth in its 2026 relaunch.

I have only worn Armani and Le Skin myself, so the others are noted as research picks. Concealer matters too, and a peach corrector works best on olive-toned dark circles.

What Blush and Bronzer Colors Suit Olive Skin?

The blush colors that suit olive skin are neutral pinks, tea rose, terracotta, mauve and berry. The bronzers that suit olive skin are neutral or soft golden browns applied sheer. Avoid pale baby pinks and red-orange bronzers, which can look chalky or orange on olive undertones.

My top blush shades are Rare Beauty Encourage and Hope in the liquid formula, and Divine and Worth in the Matte Bouncy formula. Makeup artist brand Patrick Ta recommends corals and terracotta for warm olive, and mauve and berry for cool olive.

For bronzer I wear the Rare Beauty Warm Wishes stick, and my Rare Beauty bronzer review covers every shade. If you want a warm coral, look for one with a soft golden base rather than a bright orange one.

Sheer, neutral bronzers you can build slowly.

What Colors and Jewelry Look Best on Olive Skin?

The colors that look best on olive skin are earth tones like olive green, camel, rust and terracotta, plus jewel tones like emerald, deep teal and plum. Crisp white usually looks better than cream. Many people with olive undertones can wear both gold and silver jewelry, so the jewelry test is often unclear.

Neon yellow and ashy pastels are the colors to be careful with. They can make olive skin look sallow or gray.

The same rule carries over to lips. My favorite everyday lip is Rhode Press, a warm pinky mauve, and my Rhode Lip Shape guide for light-medium skin has more shades in that family.

Can Fair or Pale Skin Have Olive Undertones?

Yes, fair and pale skin can have olive undertones. Olive shows up at every depth, from very fair to very deep. Fair olive skin often looks slightly gray or green next to white, and it is one of the hardest groups to match because most fair foundation shades lean pink.

If you are fair olive, look for the lightest olive or N shades in a line. Lisa Eldridge shade 2.5 and Tower 28 concealer 1.5 BW are both labeled olive at the fair end.

Deep olive skin has the same issue in reverse. Many deep shades lean red, so a neutral or olive-labeled deep shade like Armani 11 or 13.8 is worth swatching first.

Mistakes to Avoid With Olive Undertones

The biggest mistake with olive undertones is trusting the vein test. It is the least reliable check for olive skin. The second is choosing foundation by store lighting, which hides the green-gray cast you are trying to match.

  • Going too warm to fix grayness. A yellow shade will cover the gray but turn orange as it sets.
  • Swatching on your hand. Your hand and face are often different colors. Always swatch on the jaw.
  • Using a heavy red-orange bronzer. It turns muddy on olive skin. Go sheer and neutral.
  • Wearing pale baby pink blush. It can sit on top of olive skin and look chalky.
  • Buying one shade for the whole year. Olive skin tans fast, so you may need a summer shade.

Once you have the right shade, apply bronzer where the sun naturally hits: forehead, cheekbones and jaw.

How I Tested This

I tested this guide on my own light-medium neutral olive skin, using the foundations, blushes, bronzer and lip I already wear and have reviewed on Layers of Beauty. I checked every olive shade name and price on the brand or retailer site on October 6, 2026. Products I have not worn are labeled as research picks.

The undertone tests come from my own trial and error, plus guidance from Phyrra, Healthline and makeup artist Lisa Eldridge, who has written about mixing custom shades for olive-toned models.

I also read through the olive skin threads people kept sending me. The same complaint showed up again and again: every foundation looks gray or orange, and nobody explains why.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have olive undertones?+

You likely have olive undertones if pink foundations look ashy on you and yellow ones look orange. Olive skin has a soft green or gray cast in daylight. It often looks fresher next to pure white than cream, and it usually tans easily.

Are olive undertones warm or cool?+

Olive undertones can be warm, cool or neutral. Olive is the green-gray cast, not the temperature. Warm olive leans golden, cool olive leans gray, and neutral olive sits in between, so start with neutral shades and adjust from there.

What is the difference between olive and neutral undertones?+

Neutral undertones are a balance of pink and yellow, while olive undertones add a green or gray cast. Neutral foundation shades usually match neutral skin. On olive skin, neutral shades can look a bit too beige, so an olive-labeled shade is often a better match.

Do olive undertones look better in gold or silver?+

Many people with olive undertones can wear both gold and silver. Warm olive skin often leans toward gold, and cool olive skin toward silver. Because olive skin is muted, the jewelry test often gives an unclear answer, so use the foundation test instead.

Can pale skin have olive undertones?+

Yes, pale skin can have olive undertones. Olive shows up at every depth, from fair to deep. Fair olive skin is hard to match because most fair foundations lean pink, so look for the lightest olive or neutral shades in a range.

Do olive undertones tan easily?+

Yes, olive undertones usually tan easily and burn less than pink-toned skin. Olive skin tends to turn golden or slightly green-bronze instead of red. Because it tans fast, many olive people need a lighter winter shade and a deeper summer shade.

What foundation shades are best for olive undertones?+

The best foundation shades for olive undertones are labeled olive, N for neutral, or WO for warm olive. Armani Luminous Silk 9, 11 and 13.8, Dior Forever Skin Glow 2WO and 3WO, and Haus Labs 190, 260 and 330 are labeled olive as of October 2026.

What blush color is best for olive skin?+

The best blush colors for olive skin are neutral pinks, tea rose, terracotta, mauve and berry. My top picks are Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush in Encourage and the Matte Bouncy Blush in Divine. Pale baby pinks can look chalky on olive skin.

Why does foundation look gray on olive skin?+

Foundation looks gray on olive skin when the shade is too pink or too cool. The pink base mixes with the green in olive skin and reads as ashy. Try an olive or neutral shade at the same depth, and check it in daylight after it sets.

Is the vein test accurate for olive undertones?+

No, the vein test is the least reliable way to check for olive undertones. Olive skin often shows a mix of green and blue veins, which gives no clear answer. The foundation mismatch test and the white-versus-cream test are much more useful.

The Bottom Line

Finding out I have olive undertones took the guesswork out of buying makeup. I stopped blaming the formulas and started reading shade names.

That is what Layers of Beauty is about: understanding your skin well enough to choose with confidence. You don't need more products, just the right undertone.

If you only change one thing, swatch a neutral or olive shade on your jaw in daylight. It is the fastest way to see what has been off all along.
